Better Neighbourhoods: Making Higher Densities Work

Better Neighbourhoods: Making Higher Densities Work

Date: 2004

Mæ’s Principal Alex Ely led this research study that looks at the relationship of high-density housing and design quality of our neighbourhoods for the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE).

This report investigates the barriers that prevent successful high-density schemes from being built. It explores where in the process good developments fall down and how the planning system can help or hinder higher density?

The report also looks in detail at the benefits of higher density housing, challenging negative perceptions and demonstrating how higher densities can contribute to vibrant, successful neighbourhoods where people want to live.
